KIDS AND SMARTPHONES

For most adults the “touch” interface on computers (you no longer use a keyboard) is a convenience. However, it is also a small revolution because now even small children under the age of two can use a smartphone or tablet. In the pre-touch, era to use a computer or mobile phone you had to know the letters of the alphabet because any intervention passed through the keyboard. This meant you learned to use a computer when the brain was already relatively old with a background formed over previous years. Many computer wiz kids discovered and cultivated their predisposition after the age of puberty when brain plasticity was already diminishing. Now that the keyboard belongs to the past the touch appliance shifts the age when computers enter children’s lives back a few years and the computer becomes the background on which to build the rest. The computer becomes part of the person just like the mother tongue. This is where the digital era begins and the children born now will have a brain formed with the help of computers. Those born in the pre-touch era will have learned to use the computer just as they learned a foreign language, to drive the car, to cook etc. Should we worry? We will know when today’s infants who have a computer grow up.
