WHY STUDY?

WHY STUDY?

While visiting my patients I sometimes ask them about what and where they study. If I ask why they go to school, the younger ones answer: “To find a job when I grow up”. The bigger ones say: “Because I want to become a lawyer, doctor or consultant”. Finding a job is very important, but however difficult it may be, it simply does not require almost 20 years study (junior + middle + high school + university). Obviously, school and university do much more than help us find a job. They must teach us to think independently, without having someone tell us what we must think. They must teach us to defend our ideas, possibly in more than just one language, both in speaking and writing. They must teach us to skim what is unnecessary and preserve the essential knowledge, news and facts. They must train that powerful tool we have at the top of our body to develop culture and critical thinking. In brief, school and university must educate. Afterwards we can specialize in a specific area and look for a job. Subjects that we study at school such as Latin, Philosophy and History will not directly help you in a job in say Finance, but if you succeed in ‘dominating’ those subjects at school, you develop mental tools that allow you to work in Finance a lot more effectively than if you never studied them.
