KIDS AND TV

Of the many reasons why children should not spend too much time in front of TV, I’ll choose two. First, the time lapse between one TV image and the next is in milliseconds. Instead, when we look at things around us like a tree and then a dog the time lapse in passing from one setting to the next, and the relative mental tuning in, is in the tenths of a second. The two speeds are actually very different. Watching a film and thus adapting to several thousand high speed frame changes is particularly tiring for a child with respect to doing something else such as playing in the garden. Second, for a child learning and interaction are two processes that go together. Without interaction, even a very interesting program does not lead to learning. A TV program where the presenter says: “Hi guys! Today I am going to ask you to…..” is of no use in terms of teaching/learning because the kids realize that they are not expected to answer back: “Hi!” and that whatever they say will be meaningless as concerns the outcome of the program.
