JUDGING DISTANCES

JUDGING DISTANCES

Adults usually do not have any particular difficulty crossing a road with a lot of traffic. However, only after the age of 14 years do youngsters judge the distance between a car that has just passed and an on-coming car as adults do. Before this age, the speed at which the various vehicles travel and the distance that must be covered by foot to reach the other side of the road safely, are not judged quite as well as an adult would do. Also timing one’s crossing of the road as soon as the first car has passed (if you wait you have less time to cross), is not quite right at a young age. In simulated studies 6-year old children get these calculations wrong (and get hit by a car) four times more often than 12-year old children even if the speed at which they cross the road is similar.
